Key Features and Benefits

Learn about the key features and benefits of the miniSMU MS01 source-measure unit

The miniSMU MS01 combines precision measurement capabilities with practical design considerations to provide an exceptional testing experience. Here are its key features and benefits:

Dual-Channel Operation

Two independently controllable SMU channels allow for simultaneous testing of multiple components or comparative analysis. This feature is especially valuable for:

  • Testing multiple devices in parallel
  • Testing transistors where the Gate-Source and Drain-Source must be driven and measured simultaneously
  • Testing matched pairs of components
  • Comparing performance characteristics between devices
  • Powering a device while measuring its output
  • Characterising differential circuits

Full 4-Quadrant Functionality

The miniSMU MS01 is capable of both sourcing and sinking voltage or current, providing flexibility for a wide range of testing scenarios. 4-quadrant operation means:

  • Can source positive voltage and measure positive current (Quadrant 1)
  • Can source positive voltage and measure negative current (Quadrant 2)
  • Can source negative voltage and measure negative current (Quadrant 3)
  • Can source negative voltage and measure positive current (Quadrant 4)

This complete coverage allows for comprehensive characterisation of components like solar cells, batteries, and bidirectional circuits.

4-Wire Kelvin Sensing

The miniSMU MS01 supports 4-wire (Kelvin) measurement mode for high-accuracy voltage measurements that eliminate lead resistance errors:

  • CH1 acts as the source/force channel
  • CH2 acts as the sense channel (high impedance)
  • Measurements return CH1 current + CH2 voltage (true DUT voltage)
  • Ideal for low-resistance measurements where cable/contact resistance would affect accuracy

When 4-wire mode is enabled via the companion app or Python library, Channel 2 is reserved exclusively for sensing.

High Precision

The miniSMU MS01 provides laboratory-grade precision in a compact form factor:

  • Voltage range: -12V to +12V with mV accuracy
  • Current range: -180mA to +180mA with resolution down to 10nA across 5 sub-ranges

The auto-ranging current measurement capability ensures optimal precision across a wide dynamic range, perfect for characterising devices with varying current requirements.

Compact Design

With dimensions of just 137x82x29mm, the MS01 is easily portable and space-efficient in any workspace. Its small footprint makes it ideal for:

  • Space-constrained laboratory benches
  • Field testing applications
  • Educational settings with limited resources
  • Temporary measurement setups

Flexible Power Options

The miniSMU MS01 offers versatile power solutions to fit your testing requirements:

  • Operate via USB-C for currents up to 50mA per channel
  • Use the included 12V DC adapter for full current range (up to 180mA)

This flexibility allows you to choose between the convenience of USB power for lower-power applications and the full capability of the external power supply when needed.

Versatile Connectivity

Connect via USB or WiFi 4 (802.11b/g/n) for easy integration into your testing setup:

  • USB Connection: Direct, reliable connection for standalone operation
  • WiFi Connection: Remote operation capabilities for integration into automated testing systems or operation in difficult-to-access locations

Intuitive Software Interface

The companion "miniSMU" software enables advanced measurements including:

  • I-V curves
  • Stability tests
  • Maximum power point tracking
  • Data logging
  • Automated sweep measurements
  • Real-time monitoring

The software interface provides both immediate results for quick tests and comprehensive data analysis for in-depth research applications.
