Power Supply Options

Power supply options and setup for the miniSMU MS01

The miniSMU MS01 offers flexible power options to accommodate different usage scenarios. This section explains the available power methods and how to set them up correctly.

Overview of Power Options

The miniSMU MS01 can be powered in two primary ways:

  1. USB-C Power - Convenient for basic operation and lower current applications
  2. 12V DC Power Adapter - Required for full current range capability

Each power option has different capabilities and use cases, as detailed below.

USB-C Power

USB-C power is ideal for portable operation or when working with low-current applications.

USB-C Power Specifications

SpecificationValueNotes
Input Voltage5V DCUSB standard
Current CapabilityLimited to 50 mA per channelSoftware-enforced limit
Suitable ForLow-power measurements, device configuration, software setup
Not Suitable ForHigh-current applications, measurements requiring >50 mA

USB-C Connection Procedure

  1. Locate the USB-C port on the rear panel of the miniSMU MS01.
  2. Connect the provided USB-C cable to this port.
  3. Connect the other end of the USB-C cable to one of the following:
    • A USB port on your computer
    • A USB power adapter that provides at least 2A of current
    • A USB power bank with sufficient capacity

USB Power Considerations

  • USB power may limit some device functionality due to the current restrictions
  • Some USB ports may not provide sufficient power, particularly on older computers
  • When using USB power, the miniSMU software will automatically limit the maximum current
  • USB power can be used simultaneously with data connection to a computer
  • USB 3.0 ports (blue) generally provide more power than USB 2.0 ports

12V DC Power Adapter

For full current range operation (up to 180 mA per channel), use the provided 12V DC power adapter.

12V DC Power Specifications

SpecificationValueNotes
Input Voltage12V DCCenter-positive
Current CapabilityUp to 180 mA per channelFull device capability
Adapter Input100-240V AC, 50/60 HzUniversal input voltage
Adapter Output12V DC, 1500 mA
Connector Type5.5mm OD, 2.1mm ID barrelCenter-positive

12V DC Connection Procedure

  1. Locate the 12V DC barrel connector on the rear panel of the miniSMU MS01.
  2. Connect the provided 12V DC power adapter to this port.
  3. Ensure the connector is fully inserted and secured.
  4. Plug the power adapter into a suitable wall outlet (100-240V AC).

Power Adapter Warnings

⚠️ Warning: Use only the provided 12V DC power adapter or an equivalent adapter with the correct specifications to avoid damaging your device.

  • Using an adapter with incorrect voltage could damage the device
  • Ensure the adapter has the correct polarity (center-positive)
  • Check that the adapter can provide sufficient current (minimum 1500 mA)
  • Do not use damaged power adapters
  • Ensure the power outlet is properly grounded for optimal safety and measurement performance

Dual-Power Considerations

When both USB-C and 12V DC power are connected simultaneously:

  • The device will prioritise the 12V DC power source
  • The USB connection will still function for data communication
  • If the 12V power is disconnected, the device may reboot and switch to USB power (with reduced current capability)

Regional Power Considerations

The provided power adapter includes:

  • Universal input voltage range (100-240V AC)
  • Detachable AC prong section for different regional standards
  • If your region requires a different plug type, use the appropriate adapter or contact customer support for region-specific options

Next Steps

Once you have successfully connected power to your miniSMU MS01, you can proceed to:

  1. Power on the device using the toggle switch on the rear panel
  2. Continue to the Connectivity Setup section to establish communication between the device and your computer

By selecting the appropriate power option for your application, you'll ensure optimal performance of your miniSMU MS01 for your specific measurement needs.
